Someday Everything (1987)
Merja Aletta Ranttila (b. 1960)
Lino, mixed media
Aine Art Museum, Tornio, Finland
Recorded July 20, 1998
A native of northern Finland, Ranttila has invoked the quiet of the winter terrain there just beyond the frame of this piece. The clatter of the innermost creatures jostling for position builds a cocoon of sound and warmth around them, noise to keep the blood flowing (someday everything will be light again). Just outside a few creatures inspect the border of the white darkness beyond - a darkness matched here by the almost complete silence of the museum that houses the work.
